Jonathan Bender, MS, MFA - Founder of WholeSpeak, LLC

WholeSpeak, LLC founder
Jonathan Bender, MS, MFA  has been active in public speaking, live performance, and "the performance of everyday life" for 30 years, as well as on a path of personal and spiritual growth since a very young age. Educationally, he began with a BA in Dramatic Art and Anthropology from UC Berkeley, later followed by a Master’s Degree in Performance Studies and Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where he specialized in the study of everyday life as performance. Next, his MFA program in Theater: Contemporary Performance at Naropa University specialized in physical, ensemble-developed theater and the creation of new work. There, he trained with such luminaries as Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project (renowned for The Laramie Project and I Am My Own Wife), Meredith Monk and The House, and the SITI Company.

He has been a performer since the mid-1980's and a theater director since 1989, and his writing has been produced in various theaters since the 1990's. He began working as a speech coach and acting teacher in 1995. In the Belly of the Whale, his solo show on Jewish identity, toured nationwide, and he is Artistic Director of The Illuminated Theater.

Jonathan's coaching combines his love for live performance with a lifelong quest for fostering personal growth and societal transformation.  After observing that his acting and public speaking workshops were transforming his students not just as performers but also in their everyday lives, he sought to make these techniques available to the general public. To fulfill this missive, he created WholeSpeak to offer highly effective coaching, workshops and seminars to provide individuals and corporations with immediate and discernible results. He has trained thousands of performers and public speakers at colleges and universities, private acting studios, and at multiple schools in California and Colorado.

Over time, Jonathan realized he held a particular gift for helping entrepreneurs and holistic practitioners, who themselves value personal and spiritual growth, to hone their message and their business to create impact in their ideal clients' lives while creating an abundant income. Jonathan resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, and frequently travels to coach, lead workshops, give keynotes, direct and perform. He now leads online trainings, classes and workshops, and works with a small number of private clients who are ready to invest in the highest expertise of speaking.

The WholeSpeak Difference...

You know how to express yourself. However, your performance habits may not always get the desired results.

William Shakespeare wrote, "All the world's a stage" - and we're "merely players." What if this were true - that you were largely performing what you had learned through family and through society? This would mean that, on some level, you're not fully expressing the authentic you because you're replicating patterns you learned. This gets reflected in how we move, talk, and even feel.

For example, perhaps your habit is nervousness or fear. Maybe this causes you to try too hard to express yourself, which results in physical tension, which then makes the voice strained, and then causes other people not trust you because it feels forced. Or you'd rather, well, run away, so you “hide,” which then doesn’t give you the presence you have when you’re with people you know well. Or, you might be incredibly experienced and very comfortable – but don’t know how to get to the next level.

The WholeSpeak Difference is twofold.

First, our philosophy is that these problems are not part of your essence – they’re just habits you’ve learned through society to perform. But they’re not truly you. Why a performance? Because other people watch them, and you keep performing them over and over. But you can learn to do new things. …How?

This takes us to part two: the bodymind. Asian healing philosophy views the body, mind and emotions as aspects of the bodymind, which is why acupuncture is as effective at treating depression as diabetes - it treats the whole person. Similarly, WholeSpeak utilizes a “whole-person” approach, to eradicate fear, transform nervousness into excitement, and provide the tools you need to go to the next level - and to live life more joyfully and freely.

By learning specific exercises, you'll not only gain tools that will make a concrete difference, but will actually transform your presence, comfort, and more. WholeSpeak coaches clients in 5 areas, per our holistic model of communication:
  • Content. Includes strategy, structure, organization and attention-grabbers.
  • Comfort and Confidence. It's essential to be relaxed, at ease, and and enjoy the act of expression and communication.
  • Connection. The best speaking involves 1) deep listening and 2) strong intention to positively impact others - part of WholeSpeak's 9 facets of connection.
  • Change - Vocal and Physical Dynamics. To keep others rapt attention, learn a vocabulary of self-expression (e.g., pitch, tone, tempo, body language, and much more).
  • Charisma and Presence. Also known as presence, this can be learned! How? By getting fully present - mentally, physically, and emotionally.

If any one of these is not at 100%, you're not performing or communicating at your full potential. Contact us today for a free breakthrough session.

Specific Applications

Public Speaking & Presentation Skills Training
When we encounter a situation where we have to "perform ourselves" - such as when giving a speech - our regular everyday performance can suddenly become stilted. It's easy to feel nervous and not act like your natural self. Hands may suddenly feel like large, awkward objects and we somehow forget how to express ourselves skillfully.

This generally happens because of the tendency to focus too much on the audience, rather than on one's own experience. Though individual coaching, as well as through
classes and seminars for businesses, participants  not only
learn an abundance of skills, but also discover comfort (and, even joy!) in the act of speaking in front of others.  By combining these skills with ensemble-building theater techniques, organizations can receive fun, engaging and effective team-building - and increase sales, as well as cultivate leadership ability and presence.

Performance Training - for performers, and for everyday life
Performance training techniques, for actors, dancers, and others, transform the performer by waking up her or his awareness to habitual patterns of movement, thinking, and feeling. For example, a good actor needs to have a wide variety of emotions available in order to be fully alive on stage. This training also affects performers positively in their lives: they learn to be physically present, mentally alert, and
emotionally available.

The philosophy of WholeSpeak is that performance training can benefit everyone in the everyday performance of their lives. WholeSpeak makes these tried and tested tools available to all as means for transformation.
